Highlight of the Day: Opening Ceremony

 

The AIS'17 Opening Ceremony took place on Monday 29 June at 17:00. Formally opened by Victor Kyalo, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of ICT in Kenya, the session also saw speeches by Sunday Folayan (Chair of the AFRINIC Board), Francis Wangusi (GCAK), Sarah Kiden (AFRALO), Dr Nii Quaynor (AfNOG Convenor), Jean Robert Hountomey (AfricaCERT), George Mokogi (TESPOK), Pierre Dandjinou (ICANN), Dawit Bekele (ISOC) Ousmane Moussa Tessa (WACREN) and Alex Corenthin (AfTLD). The Opening Ceremony was followed by a Welcome Cocktail.

 

AIS'17 Newcomers' Session

 

Earlier in the day, first time meeting attendees were given a comprehensive introduction to AIS'17, the AFRINIC meetings and the AFRINIC community. Discussions centred on the various organisations and stakeholders that make up the African - and global - Internet industry, what AFRINIC is and does, the AFRINIC community and the Policy Development process.

 

Sunday's Workshops and Tutorials 

 

Workshops continued into Sunday with attendees taking part in: 

  • AFRINIC's Internet Number Resources Management Training Course 
  • FIRE Africa Workshop
  • AFNOG Tutorials
  • Android Apps Tutorial
  • Google Apps Tutorial 

AfREN Forum

The forum included updates from WACREN, UbuntuNet Alliance,  and ASREN. Dr. Nii Quaynor gave a report on the “Status of NRENs in Africa”  followed by a session chaired by Dr Pascal Hoba, Ubuntunet Alliance, on opportunities for partnering and mobilising resources. The last session, AfREN Communique Writing, was chaired by Ms Nodumo Dhlamini from the AAU.

 

AfGWG

The AfGWG-16 Meeting saw several government officials, regulators and law enforcement agencies gather on Monday 29 May from 10:00 am to 3.00 pm.
