Welcome

Welcome to AFRINIC-25! Kicking off on 25 November 2016, the meeting has been in full swing since Friday, with plenty of Training Courses and co-located meetings to keep everyone busy. The official Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday, 28 November, and we'll head straight into plenary sessions afterwards, as of 11:00 (MUT). Below you'll find a short overview of what's been happening over the last few days.

AFRINIC Local Members' Meeting

The AFRINIC local Members' Meeting took place on 25 Novemberand brought together Mauritian members and key staff members to discuss membership, policies, administrative processes and AFRINIC's news and activities. AFRINIC's Registration Services team gave an introduction to AFRINIC, the Policy Development Process (PDP), current policies and policy proposals under discussion. The team also gave an overview of AFRINIC services and initiatives, including the AFRINIC Routing Registry, RPKI, Reverse DNS, RIPE/AFRINIC Atlas and DNSSEC and talked about IPv4 and IPv6 allocation statistics. They encouraged all members to take the AFRINIC IPv6 and Internet Number Resource Management (INRM) Training courses. The Billing team covered the billing process and spoke about the challenges faced with issues like outdated contact details. The role of the Customer Services team was highlighted and the team gave an overview of processes, projects they have ongoing on member information security and their efforts in trying to maintain up-to-date contact details.

AFRINIC Training Courses

IPv6 Foundation Course

Forty people attended the AFRINIC IPv6 Foundation Course. Participants gathered to learn IPv6's core concepts to provide a solid foundation for understanding all other IPv6 topics. At the end of the course, participants were able, among other things, able to create an IPv6 address plan for their networks and configure and verify IPv6 on hosts and routers.

We interviewed one of the participants, Keolebogile Rantsetse, lecturer from Limkokwing University in Botswana who  shared her experience attending the IPv6 workshop.

Internet Number Resources Management (INRM) Training

Twenty-five people attend the AFRINIC INRM Course to learn how AFRINIC manages and distributes IP address space, what services it offers and how members can effectively manage their requests and Internet number resource allocations/assignments.

AFRINIC is currently looking for hosts and partners for its 2017 Training Series. If you'd like to be considered, please check the requirements and get in touch.

AfricaCERT Technical Training

The AfricaCERT training team has once again travelled to Mauritius to conduct three days of both management and technical training. Participants gathered to receive world class training and find out how to set up a Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) in their own countries. Koichiro Sparky Komiyama and Katsuhiro Mori (JPCERT/CC), conducted several hands-on training workshops on Network Forensics and Malware Analysis. As malware infections are commonly seen throughout Africa, the sessions focused on showing how CSIRT staff can efficiently analyze log files, malware and network capture files to identify such incidents. CERT-FR also gave a presentation, which enabled the group to find out more about each team's activities and profiles. The French Cybersecurity Agency - ANSSI - team presented several known cybersecurity regulation models and gave a presentation on Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP). Mr. Komiyama expressed his appreciation to all the support provided by AFRINIC leadership and staff, and commented that such training workshops are "... a crucial step to realise secure, resilient cyber space for Africa and the rest of the world."
