Ten Years of AFRINIC

On 23-24 May 2004, the first public policy meeting of the emerging African Internet Registry was held in Dakar Senegal at the Ngor Diarama hotel. Around 130 people from 30 countries attended this first meeting, AFRINIC 1. In April 2005, ICANN officially accredited AFRINIC as the world’s fifth Regional Internet Registry (RIR). Since then, the AFRINIC community has grown to encompass a vast number of people from all over the world who share an interest in the development of the Internet.

To commemorate ten years of AFRINIC, we are documenting the achievements and landmarks of AFRINIC and are building a gallery of AFRINIC-related images from the past 10 years, and would like to recognise those people who have helped with its development along the way.

The AFRINIC community is invited to contribute to this project, which will culminate in a special week of celebrations at the next Africa Internet Summit, taking place in May 2015. If you have pictures to share or have ideas on what events from the past 10 years should be documented, please let us know via the web form below.

We'll also be sharing some fond memories of the past 10 years via Twitter using the #AFRINIC10years hash tag. We hope you'll also tweet your memories, photos and anecdotes so we can reminisce together.
